Sell Your Truck

When it comes to selling your used truck, you want to make sure you reach as many potential buyers as possible. By listing your vehicle for sale on multiple sites, you can practically reach all automotive shoppers that are using the internet to find a used truck. But, it's important to keep in mind that you should plan on it taking at least 2-3 months to sell your truck, so don't get frustrated if your vehicle does not sell within the first week or two. Here are our recommendations on places and ways to get your truck sold:

1) OfficialTruckClearance.com is independently operated and focused specifically on helping educate and connect truck buyers and sellers. You can add your truck to our national database of vehicles for sale, for free, by setting up an ad on Postlets.com ( which will also syndicate out your listing to other free classifieds sites like Google Base, Oodle.com, Vast.com, and others).

2) Cars.com is one of largest classifieds sites online that carries trucks for sale, and if you list your truck for sale they offer a program with a money back guarantee. Cars.com is part of Classified Ventures which is owned by 5 of the largest media and newspaper companies in the US, so your listing will receive good exposure on Cars.com and potentially through local newspaper websites owned by those 5 companies. We find that the ad packages on Cars.com are fairly priced and they display listings from dealers and private parties well.

3) AutoTrader.com is also one of the largest classifieds site online that lists trucks for sale, and by some measurements, AutoTrader.com receives more monthly website traffic than Cars.com. So, it's definitely worth listing your vehicle on AutoTrader.com as well, but we feel as though when they display listings to buyers, they give a little more priority to dealer listings vs. private party listings, so you may not receive as much exposure as the dealer listings on their site.

4) eBayMotors.com is a good option if you have a very unique truck or if you have been unable to sell your truck after 2-3 months of listing it for sale in other places, and you really want to get it sold. Keep in mind that eBayMotors is an auction based model so you may not get as much money as you would like, but through "Reserve" settings, if you set a low minimum price as your reserve or even if you go with the "No Reserve" option, you will increase the interest in your vehicle and increase the likeliness of selling it.

By pursuing the recommendations above, your vehicle will reach the majority of consumers that search for used trucks online since many other large automotive sites (KBB, Edmunds, AOL Autos, MSN Autos, Yahoo Autos, etc.) pull in listings or link to the primary sources listed above. Other options that you may want to consider include:

a) Targeting additional local sales options, such as dropping a For Sale sign on your truck and parking it in a highly trafficked area, placing an ad in local city/town newspapers, or placing a listing in local focused websites such as Craigslist.org or Vehix.com.

b) Calling local used truck dealers, and seeing if they want to buy it from you. One of the largest used car dealer groups that proactively does this is CarMax.com.

c) Consider trading the truck in, if you are buying something new from a dealer.

d) Donating the vehicle to a local charity and taking advantage of the tax credit (in which case you should consult a financial advisor).

e) Email or contact your family, friends, and work associates to see if anyone in your personal network is interested.

Here is some additional advice for when you decide "I need to sell my truck!":

Take a little time to get the truck ready for sale. Have it cleaned or possibly detailed by a professional, pull together all of the maintanence records, and consider getting an oil change or a tune up. Many dealerships or national repair facilities (i.e. PepBoys or Midas) offer a “For Sale” tune up that covers a number of different key areas. Run a truck history report on your truck, and if it has a clean title history market it as such. Check the Kelley Blue Book value to make sure you are pricing the truck fairly. Make sure you keep print outs of the truck history report and the KBB pricing report to provide to buyers. Start marketing your truck by listing it in a few of different advertising channels. As a private party seller, you or the buyer may be responsible for providing certain information to the state, in order for the new owner to properly register and pay tax on the truck. Contact your local DMV to find out the costs and process associated with registering a private party sale with the state. Provide prospective buyers with as much information and as many photos as possible. The more information you provide people, the more likely they are to trust you and become interested in the truck for sale. Good Luck!
